Kwentong Bayan: Labour of Love (an excerpt)

By Althea Balmes (Illustrator), and Jo SiMalaya Alcampo (Writer)

Kwentong Bayan: Labour of Love is an ongoing community-based comic book project created in collaboration with, and informed by, the lives of caregivers, advocates and allies. It is created by Toronto-based artists Althea Balmes (Illustrator), and Jo SiMalaya Alcampo (Writer).

In the Filipino language, Kwentong Bayan is the literal translation of “community stories”.  The collection of accessible resources highlights the realities of the caregiver experience and the personal stories of the women and the community that support them. Through stories of friendship, love and struggle and women’s empowerment, the comic aims to broaden the conversation around caregiving and Filipino migrant workers in Canada.

Our four-page submission for the Centre for Imaginative Ethnography “Imaginings Project” is an excerpt from the first chapter of the full comic book, Kwentong Bayan: Labour of Love (that is currently under production).

Our comics will be featured in the anthology, Drawn to Change: Graphic Histories of Working Class Struggle, edited by the Graphic History Collective with historian, Paul Buhle.  The book will be published with Between the Lines Press in February 2016.
